Don\u2019t forget when you\u2019re writing to use precise descriptors that evoke something very clear in the mind of the reader. Even in screenwriting, the quality of prose to some degree either engages or repels the reader and thus the experience of your screenplay. <\/p>\n

Try to avoid descriptors that are ambiguous, contradictory or confusing, because the reader won\u2019t know what to make of them. <\/p>\n

For example, introducing a female protagonist as a \u2018homely academic\u2019 in a \u2018skin-tight pencil skirt\u2019 is confusing, because a homely academic wouldn\u2019t likely be wearing something youthful and sexy. This imagery is confused, and so I won\u2019t have a clear picture of that character when reading. If I don\u2019t have a clear picture, then I really have no picture at all \u2013 that is really bad for your script. <\/p>\n

Subsequently, every time that character appears on the page, I will ask myself, \u201cOkay, are we hot for teacher or are we straight academic?\u201d I won\u2019t know who this character is. It\u2019s very distracting. <\/p>\n

Or, for example, I read something recently that introduced a location as \u2018a wonder of architecture\u2019 that was basically a tract house. Tract houses are tacky \u2013 they are no wonder. Using the phrase \u201carchitectural wonder\u201d evokes the wonders of the world. So, then following that up with \u201ctract house\u201d is very confusing and distracting. <\/p>\n
